Battery Storage Explained: When It Actually Pays

Storage is for reliability, not savings

With net metering available, the grid is already an efficient and free battery. Add storage when outages disrupt you, when you need to run critical loads, or when demand charges make peak shaving worthwhile.

Lithium versus tubular

LiFePO4 costs more upfront but delivers 6,000+ cycles, deeper usable capacity, no maintenance and a compact footprint. Tubular lead-acid is cheaper initially but needs topping up and typically needs replacing within six years.

Size it around loads, not wishes

List the loads that must stay on — lights, fans, router, fridge, a pump — and the hours they must run. Backing up an air conditioner multiplies the battery bank and often is not worth it.

Retrofits are usually straightforward

Most existing on-grid plants can accept a hybrid inverter and battery later. Plan the space and the cable route during the original installation, and the upgrade stays simple.
