What the government order says
Through G.O. (Ms) No.102 dated 19 September 2026, the Energy Department of Tamil Nadu has approved a new Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme running in convergence with the central Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The state has earmarked Rs.50 crore to support one lakh domestic consumers who install rooftop solar by 31 March 2027. This was first announced in the State Budget 2026-27, which promised a subsidy of up to Rs.1 lakh when combined with the central assistance.
How much extra subsidy do you get?
The state subsidy is a fixed amount paid in addition to the Central Financial Assistance from PM Surya Ghar: Rs.5,000 for systems up to 1 kW, Rs.10,000 for systems up to 2 kW, and Rs.22,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. For a typical 3 kW home system, the central subsidy of Rs.78,000 plus the state's Rs.22,000 takes the total support to Rs.1 lakh — matching the Budget announcement.
Who is eligible and from when?
Any domestic (household) electricity consumer in Tamil Nadu who registers on the PM Surya Ghar national portal from 5 August 2026 onwards is covered, until the benefit reaches one lakh consumers. The subsidy is paid after successful installation, commissioning and verification of the rooftop system. Applications are first-come-first-served, so early registration matters.
How the money reaches you
Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is the nodal agency monitoring the scheme, while the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) acts as the Programme Management Agency. Beneficiary details are processed through the government's IFHRMS system and the subsidy is credited directly to your bank account by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) — no middlemen, no office visits.
